Introduction

Pneumonia is inflammation of the air sacs caused most often by an infection due to a bacteria or virus. Although pneumonia can happen in any person, people with underlying lung diseases are more susceptible and may pose unique challenges.

Common Symptoms due to Pneumonia:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Productive cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Body aches

Diagnosis and Treatment of Pneumonia

A chest X-ray is usually needed to see the pneumonia. In addition to a physical examination, blood tests including blood cultures may be necessary. In some cases, if a person is not improving with standard treatment or if an unusual infection is suspected, a sample of lung secretions may be obtained by doing a procedure called the flexible bronchoscopy.

At Breathe Oklahoma, we will help you decide on a plan of treatment based on clinical information, the types of infection in your community, and types of infection you might be at risk for if you have underlying medical conditions.
